Attracted by the physical and formal difficulties of producing a large piece and making it function aesthetically, Heath utilizes the large format presented by his large vessels to change relations between form and proportion, as well as changing how an individual physically encounters those aesthetic elements. The surface area of these pieces, which is accentuated by their small bases, provides the proper space for glaze expression that is not wholly possible on smaller vessels. Heath’s large vessels transfigure commonplace physical realities into new aesthetic experiences for the viewer.
